Similarly, and for the same reasons, stop talking about your insomnia. For many people who have suffered from insomnia for months or years, insomnia becomes our identity, setting us apart in life. We reinforce the seeming gravity of our situation by associating ourselves with insomnia. We and insomnia become one. Don’t become its ambassador!
If someone asks you how you slept last night or recently, say something positive about your sleep, whether you did or didn’t sleep and change the subject. If they are people who know you well, and know your history of insomnia, ask them not to ask you again.
Don’t identify yourself with insomnia anymore. By talking about insomnia constantly, you are feeding it. This is how it takes root, grows and spreads its wings. It is a monster that needs nourishment. Remember, don’t feed it. You have already spent too much time on this and you have better things to do with your time. Find a sentence that inspires confidence, that you see as possible today or in the future. For example “I sleep so well”, and write it down 10 times a day or repeat it out loud. You’ll find that this will help you detach from your association with insomnia to a point of relief.
