One of the most common concerns of insomniacs is that we are convinced that we have special circumstances that are unique to us. We are certain that there is something wrong with us, beyond anxiety. When those around us tend to sleep well, doctors are unable to provide a solution and when everything we try seems to not work, this leads us to believe that our case is unique and unresolvable.
As you can imagine, it is very difficult to adopt a helpful mindset for solving a problem if you think something is wrong with you or that your case is different. Your case is not unique. More than 10% of the US population suffers from chronic insomnia, as chronic as yours, and as chronic as mine was. Such figures are similar in most developed countries around the world.
Once we become an ambassador for insomnia, it becomes our identity and forms part of us. Our friends and family also associate us with sleeplesssness, reinforcing that sense of identity and uniqueness.
Don’t let insomnia define who you are, you are much more than that.
