We want to sleep so badly. All we want to do is SLEEP. Think for a moment of those around you who say they sleep well and do not even think about whether they will sleep or not tonight. They simply don’t care as they feel no need to think about sleep. It’s similar to those of us who can walk. We don’t often think about this ability until it’s taken away from us.
The more you desire sleep, the less you will sleep. Unfulfilled desire creates frustration which in turn increases desire in a continuous loop. The more you try to control your sleep, the more it signals to the brain that there really is a problem that needs to be controlled. When the brain thinks there is a threat in sleep, it becomes more fearful, which directly impacts sleep negatively. A very effective way to give up control is to not know what time it is during the night. Keep any clock faces well-hidden in your bedroom! There are many factors that can cause sleep disturbances: stress, a health problem, a heavy meal. But if your desire for sleep is not “activated”, these problems are limited to themselves. When circumstances return to normal, without a burning desire for sleep, you sleep well again the next night. It is therefore important to reduce your desire. When you become aware of what is behind your sleep disturbances, when you understand that your thoughts and behaviours are the cause of your difficulties, then you will be able to let go.
